Q

Long Bone

A

Longer compare to their width. Wider epiphyes (ends) and longer-narrower diaphysis (shaft).

Q

Short Bone

A

Equal width and lenght. Made Mostly of cancellous bone. Has many diffrent functions eg. weight bearing and shock absorption.

Q

Irregular Bone

A

Does not have the charactristics of the other bone types. They have various shapes and functions. Ofen is not only cancellous bone and has holes.

A

Important for the protection of vital organs. Bones of the core (eg. skull, sternem, ribs, vertabral colum, sacrum, coccyx.)

Q

Rib Cage

A

aka Thoratic cage. Main parts are the ribs and the sternum (breats bone). Attached to the Thorasic vertabrae. 12 pairs of ribs.

17
Q

What are the 4 limbs on the body

A

Arm, Forearm, Thigh, Leg

18
Q

Humerus

A

Single proximal long bone in arm.

19
Q

Femur

A

Single proximal long bone in thigh.

20
Q

Ulna and Radius

A

Two distal long bones in forearm.

21
Q

Tibia and Radius

A

Two distal long bones in legs.

22
Q

What bones are in the hand

A

Carpals (8), Metacarpals (5), Phlanges (14, 2 in thumb)

23
Q

What bones are in the foot

A

Tarsals (7), Metatarsals (5), Phlanges (14, 2 in big toe)

24
Q

What bones are in the Pectoral Girdle

A

Clavicle and Scapula

25
What bones are in the Pelvic Girdle
2 Hip bones and Sacrum (part of the axial skeleton)
26
Osteogenic
Stem cells used to produce "osteoblasts"
27
Osteoblasts
Used to make new bone matrix
28
Osteocytes
Mature bone cells
29
Osteoclasts
Breaks away old bone cells.
30
Osteons
Longitudinal unit with compact bone. Main function to provide a pathway for nutrients to get to cells in the ECM.
31
Central Canal
In the osteon, contains blood vessels and nerves.
32
Lacunae
Lakes for ostocytes
33
Canaliculi
Channels for osteocytes through the ECM
34
Trabeculae
Struts of lamella bone.
35
Bone Remodeling
Allowing bones to grow, also knowen as bone homeostasis.
