What do long bones do?
Support weight and facilitate movement
What are examples of long bones?
Femur, tibia, fibula, metatarsals
What do short bones do?
Provide stability
What are examples of short bones?
Wrists, ankles
How are short bones shaped?
Like cubes
What do irregular bones do?
They have a complex shape to match their job
What are examples of irregular bones?
Ilium, vertebra
What do flat bones do?
Protect organs, serve as anchor points for muscles, have red bone marrow to make red blood cells
What are examples of flat bones?
Ribs, pelvis, skull
What do sesamoid bones do?
Protect tendons
What is an example of a sesamoid bone?
The kneecap (patella)
