14 bones
What are the bones of the viscerocranium?
vomer, zygomatic (x2), palatine (x2), inferior nasal concha (x2), mandible, lacrimal (x2), nasal (x2)
What is the name of the joints that bones of the skull articulate at?
sutures (except for temporomandibular joint)
What are the interactions between sutures called?
fontanelles
What are the names of the fontanelles that can be seen on the foetal skull and approximately what age do they close?
Anterior (2-2.5 years)
Anterolateral (3 months)
posterolateral (1 year)
posterior (3 months)
What are the names given to the fontanelles when they close?
anterior- bregma
anterolateral- pterion
posterior- lambda
posterolateral- asterion
What is the metopic suture?
separates the 2 halves of the frontal bone until they fuse at the age of 7
