Location
At the furthermost distal point of the body, attaching to the tibia and fibula at the ankle joint.
Structure
Made up of 3 sections made up of a total 7 foot bones, 14 phalanges and 5 metatarsals.
Hindfoot: Calcaneus and talus
Midfoot: navicular, cuboid and 3 cuneiforms (1st medial, 2nd intermediate and 3rd lateral)
Forefoot: metatarsals and phalanges
Function
To bear the weight of the body, act as a foot muscle attachment site and create a spring like motion to absorb the body’s weight from movements.
Hindfoot landmarks
Talus:
Head, neck, body
Trochlear (articular surface for tibia and fibula)
Calcaneus:
Calcaneal tuberosity (heel): posterior surface & medial processes
Talar shelf
Fibular trochlea
Midfoot landmarks
Navicular + tuberosity
Cuboid
Cuneiforms (1st medial, 2nd intermediate, 3rd lateral)
Forefoot landmarks
Metatarsals:
1-5 (base, shaft and head)
5: styloid process
Phalanges:
Digit 1: proximal and distal phalanges
Digits 2-5: Proximal, middle and distal phalanges
All have a base, shaft and head
