Bones, Joints + Cartilage Flashcards
1
Q
What are the functions of bone?
A
- Weight bearing / support
- protection
- mineral store
- blood formation
2
Q
What are the types of bones?
A
- Structural
- Flat
- Irregular
- Short
- Long
- Sesamoid
3
Q
Characteristics of spongy bone
A
- Less dense than compact bone
- Network of lamoriated trabecular filled with bone marrow
- No Haversian systems’
- orientation reflect main directions of mechanical forces
4
Q
What are the two types of ossification (bone formation)?
A
- Endochondral: long bone
- intramembranous: flat bone, mandible, maxilla + long bones
5
Q
Endochoral ossification
A
- Bone forms as cartilage model first
- blood vessels invade cartilage
- cartilage is replaced by bone
- cartilage remains in epiphyseal growth plate
- growth plate ossifies
6
Q
Intramembranous ossification
A
- No cartilage model
- mesenchymas sees develop + mature into osteoblasts that start deposition of bone
- residual mesenchymal calls develop blood vessels & bone marrow
- also occurs in adult bone
7
Q
what are the two types of bone growth
A
- Oppositional growth
- interstitial growth
8
Q
What bone forms the supporting tissue for haemopoesis ?
A
9
Q
What bone is composed of trabecular and cortical elements?
A
