Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
What is anatomical position?
- Standing straight, forward facing,
- arms straight + thumbs facing outwards
- feet parallel + toes pointing forward
Anatomical planes
- Sagittal splits body left + right
- transverse splits top + bottom
Coronal plane splits front + back
Word for frontal+ back
Frontal = anterior
back= posterior
Medial
Towards the midline (nose is medial to the eye)
Lateral
Away from midline (ears are lateral to the eyes)
Proximal
Closer to the origin
Distal
Further from the origin
Parietal
Relating to Body cavity wall
Visceral
Relating to organs within cavity
Axial
Around central axis
Intermediate
Between two structures
Prone
Lying on stomach
Supine / recumbent
Lying on back
Trunk
Body minus 4 limbs
Median
Middle of body / sagittal
Superficial
Nearer to surface of the body
Deep / internal
Further away from surface
Unilateral
One side
Bilateral
Two sides
Ipsilateral
Same side of body (left or right)
Contralateral
Opposite side of body
Body Cavities
Cranial (head)
spinal (spine)
Dorsal (head to butt)
Thoracic (chest)
Abdominal
Pelvic
Abdominal pelvic (1+1)
Ventral (thoracic, abdominal + pelvic)
Extension vs flexion
Extension: increase the angle between body parts
Flexion: decrease the angle between body parts
Abduction vs Adduction
Abduction: movement away from midline
Adduction: movement towards midline
Circumduction
Combination of flexion, extension, abduction + adduction
Medial vs lateral rotation
Medial: rotating leg toward midline
lateral: rotation away from midline
Elevation vs depression
E: movement in superior direction
D; movement in inferior direction
Protraction vs retraction
Protraction: forward movement of shoulder
Retraction: backward movement of shoulder
Supinations vs pronation
Supination: radios + ulna are parallel
Pronation: radius rotates over ulna
Opposition vs reposition
Opposition: movement of thumb + little finger together
Reposition: return to anatomical position
Dorsiflexion vs plantarflexion
Dorsiflexion: extension of toot so it faces superiorly
Plantarflexion: flexion to face inferiorly
Inversion vs version
Inversion: sole moves towards median
Version: sole away from median
