Bones and landmarks of the Ankle & Foot Flashcards
Be able to locate all of the following.
Medial Malleolus
inside ankle
Medial Malleolar Groove
posterior side of the malleolus
Lateral Malleolus
outside ankle
Lateral Malleolar Groove
posterior side
Tuberosity of Calcaneus
back of heel
Sustentaculum tali of calcaneus
About 1 inch inferior to the medial malleolus.
Passively invert the foot to soften the surrounding tissues.
Peroneal trochlea of calcaneus
About 1 inch inferior to the lateral malleolus.
Passively evert the foot to soften the surrounding tissues.
Distal insertion of the achilles on calcaneus
on back of heel
Origin of plantar fascia
Extend patients toes and on bottom of foot near heel.
Talar Dome
3 finger thing. when you grab the lateral and medial points of the talus, between the two is the dome.
Sinus tarsi
(on talus) when you evert the foot, the “hole” on the lateral side of the foot. 45 degree angle anterior from lateral malleolus
Head (of talus)
(on talus) when you invert the foot, the “hole” on the medial side of the foot. 45 degree angle anterior to medial malleolus
Medial tubercle (of Talus)
on the medial side, 45 degrees posterior to the medial malleolus. If you dorsiflex the ankle, it pops out
First metatarsal (Hallucis)
(tarsals - metatarsals - phalanges)
on medial side of the foot
2nd-5th phalanges
the toes
PIP joint of phalanges
Proximal interphalangeal joint. Proximal joint on toes.
DIP joint of phalanges
Distal inerphalangeal joint. Distal joint on toes
2nd-5th metatarsals
long bones on foot between the tarsals and phalanges.
Tuberosity of fifth metatarsal
on the lateral side of the foot. run your hand along the edge and it is the part that sticks out.
tarsometatarsal joint
the joint between the tarsals and the metatarsals. Use the tuberosity of the fifth metatarsal as a guide point and go across foot.
Medial cuneiform
follow the 1st metatarsal up (proximally)
middle cuneiform
in line with the 2nd metatarsal. sandwiched between the medial and lateral cuneiforms
lateral cuneiform
in line with the 3rd metatarsal.
mid-tarsal joint
the joint between the cuneiforms.
navicular
on the medial side. the bump that sticks out is the tuberosity of the navicular.
cuboid
find the tuberosity of the 5th metatarsal and come proximally past the “fall-off”
