Bones And Atomic Planes Flashcards
What is a bone?
A rigid body tissue that consists of cells embedded in an abundant hard intracellular material.
What are the 4 types of bones
Long
Short
Irregular
Flat
Name the characteristics, function and location of the long bone
Characteristics: they are longer than they are wide
Function: to support the weight of the body and facilitate movement
Location: located in the appendicular skeleton
Name the characteristics, function and location of the short bone
Characteristics: equal in length, width and thickness, cubed shaped
Functions: provide stability and some movement
Location: the carpals (wrist) and tarsals (ankle)
Name the characteristics, function and location of the flat bone
Characteristics: thin and flat, often curved
Function: protect internal organs (heart, brain, pelvic organs)
Location: located in the axial skeleton
Name the characteristics, function and location of the irregular bone
Characteristics: have a complicated shape and structure
Function: protect vital organs (spinal cord)
Location: axial skeleton (vertebrae and coccyx)
Name the 3 anatomical planes
Sagittal
Frontal
Transverse
What is the sagittal plane, give examples
The vertical plane
Cuts the body into left and right planes
Flexion and extension based movements
Examples walking squatting kicking
What is the frontal plane, give examples
from left to right
Cuts body into the front and back
Abduction and adduction based movement
Examples: cartwheels, raising/lowering arm/leg sideways
What is the transverse plane, give examples
The middle of the body (horizontally)
Cuts the body into top and bottom half
Rotation based movement
Examples: throwing a discus, swinging a golf bat
