Bones Flashcards
Bones
Provide the framework of the body, protect internal organs, store calcium and other minerals and produce blood cells within the bone marrow
Short bones
Somewhat cute-shaped. Consist of a core of spongy bone (cancellous bone), enclosed in a thin surface layer of compact bone.
Ex: bones of ankles, wrists and toes
Irregular bones
Include bones that cannot be classified as short or long because of their complex shapes.
EX: vertebrae and middle ear
Flat bones
Provide broad surfaces for muscular attachment or protection for internal organs
Ex: Skull, shoulder blades, sternum
Long bones
Found in the appendages of the body such as the legs, arms and fingers
Diaphysis
Shaft, or long main portion of bone. Consists of:
Compact bone- forms a cylinder and surrounds a central canal called the medullary cavity which contains fatty yellow marrow
Distal epiphysis and Proximal epiphysis
Ends of the bones. Covered with articular cartilage, made of spongy bone
Periosteum
Dense, white fibrous membrane covers the remaining surface of bone. Contains blood and lymph vessels and nerves .
