Bone Tumors Flashcards
Xray of the femur shows a large expansile medullary mass with a somewhat moth-eaten appearance adjacent to it. You do a biopsy and the report shows poorly formed islets of bone that are curvilinear in appearance (Chinese Characters). There is no osteoblastic activity. Dx?
Fibrous Dysplasia
This is an eccentric, sharply delineated, metaphyseal lesion in long bones of adolescents. It’s usually found incidentaly. Dx?
Fibrous Coritcal Defect
A 7cm mass was found on the proximal tibia. This dz has a sclerotic margin on x-ray. The image is depicting a “storiform” pattern. Dx?
Non ossifying fibroma
12 yr male comes in with a possible femoral fracture. You do an xray and see this. Dx?
Solitary bone cyst
Cystic lesion of the femur seen in a 17yr old male that’s described as sponge filled with blood. Micrograph depicted below. Dx?
Aneurysmal Bone Cyst
A 21 yr old comes to the ER experiencing massive bone pain in the lower arm and appers to have been drinking quite a bit. Micrograph shows a cortical lesion. Dx?
Osteiod osteoma
You have a benign, cartilage capped tumor that’s attached to the skeleton by underlying stalk. There is displacement of growth plate in endochondral bones. Dx?
Osteochondroma
The xray below depicts a single mass that arose from inside the medullary cavity. Dx?
Endochondroma
30 yr old male comes in with a mass that’s undergone cystic degeneration around his knee.
Giant Cell Tumor
18 yr old male comes in with a progressively painful mass around his knee. Xray shows
Dx?
Osteosarcoma. Pic showing Codman’s triangle!
You suspect a neoplasm in the verterbra of a 45 yr old male. Micrograph below. Dx?
Chondrosarcoma
You get an xray on a 13 yr old white male that shows layers of reactive periosteum. Histology reveals small blue round cells. How do you Tx it?
Pt has Ewing’s sarcoma which is responsive to chemo and surgery and has a fairly good prognosis
