bone remodelling Flashcards
what is collagens function?
resists tension, gives small bit of slack so bones aren’t brittle
what is calciums function?
resists compression, bone is strong and solid
what are the 3 kinds of cells in bone?
osteocytes, osteoblasts, osteoclasts
what are osteocytes?
mature osteoblasts/ bone cells
what are osteoclasts?
destroy ECM
what are osteoblasts?
produce bone
what are the 6 main layers of bone?
periosteum, endosteum, outer lamellae, osteon lamellae, central canaliculi
what is and what is the function of an osteon?
a series of cylinders of lamella running longitudinally down shaft, maintains osteocytes by providing nutrients
what travels through the central canal?
blood vessels and nerves
what are canaliculi?
channels for osteocytes through ECM
what are lacunae?
lakes for osteocytes
in only what kind of bone can osteons be found in?
compact
where are osteocytes found in cancellous bone?
housed in lacunae on the surfaces of trabeculae
what is the periosteum?
outer layer on compact bone of a long bone
what is the endosteum?
inner layer on compact bone of a long bone shaft
what is a cartilage model?
all bone starts as cartilage before ossification
what is the primary ossification centre of a long bone?
diaphysis
what are the secondary ossification centres of long bones?
epiphyses
what prevents fusion of epiphyses and diaphysis?
growth/epiphyseal plate
why does the growth/epiphyseal plate prevent fusion?
prevents contact between diaphysis and epiphyses until diaphysis is fully grown then it will ossify, becoming bone to fuse the bone together signifying the end of growth
is epiphyseal fusion earlier in males or females?
females
