Bone Problems Flashcards
How are bones involved in regulating calcium levels?
- Bone can be broken down to increase calcium concentration (resorption))
- Excess calcium can be stored in bone tissue for later use (Deposition)
What is the process of resorption and deposition called?
Remodelling
What signals occur that cause remodelling?
Change in blood calcium concentration and mechanical stress
What happens when mechical stress is applied to bone?
Osteoblast acitivity increases to produce more bone so they become thicker and stronger
What happens if there is a decrease in mechanical stress i.e. if someone is bed ridden?
The osteoblast activity decreases but the osteoclast activity remains the same leading to brittle bones
What are the 8 types of fractures?
- Non-displaced
- Displaced
- incomplete
- Complete
- Linear
- Transverse
- Compund
- Simple
What is the initial step in response to a fracture?
A swelling called the external callus forms
What is osetoarthiritis?
Joint inflammation
What joints are commonly affected by asteoarthiritis?
Weight-bearing joints like feet and spine
What is primary osteoarthiritis?
Not caused by injury or disease and is due to aging of the joint
What is secondary osteoarthiritis?
Caused by disease like obesity, trauma or surgery
What kind of disease is rheumatoid athiris?
An autoimmune disease
what is oesteoporosis?
Low bone mass and loss of bone tissue leading to fragile weak bones
