Bone Marrow Transplant Flashcards
Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) is a treatment for __________. And specifically which ones?
Leukemias - ALL, AML, CML
Describe the BMT procedure -
hint (broken down into 2 main steps)
- The procedure takes healthy bone marrow from an appropriate donor
- Then the harvested healthy bone marrow is introduced into the patient who has the diseased bone marrow that has been destroyed already by then with chemo or TBI (Total Body Irradiation)
who makes the best donor for BMT?
identical twins
Before a patient receives healthy bone marrow, what must happen?
the diseased bone marrow must already be destroyed by time of transplant with chemo or TBI (Total Body Irradiation)
define “Autologous BMT”
the patient’s own bone marrow is reinfused after leukemic cells have been removed
define “Allogeneic BMT”
bone marrow is donated by a compatible donor (ex. Be The Match)
define “Syngeneic BMT”
bone marrow is donated by an identical twin; ideal donor
What are two examples of BMT failures?
a. cancer recurrence
b. graft-vs-host disease
