Q

Uses of the aspirate?

A

*To provide cells for cytological examination
Procedure: Spread sample on a slide, stain, and exam microscopically to determine the morphology

  • Provide anticoagulated specimen for flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and culture
  • DNA PCR and FISH can be done on spread marrow / anticoagulated specimen
  • RT-PCR requires anticoagulant specimens in a special medium

Q

Uses of the trephine biopsy?

A
  • Used to see the architecture of the bone marrow rather than individual cells :
  • granulomas, infiltrating neoplasm eg lymphoma ,carcinoma, marrow necrosis fibrosis
