Bone land marks Flashcards
Bone landmarks
are the bumps, grooves and holes on the bones. the markings are used for muscle attachment, passageways for blood vessels and nerves, support and movement.
Articulating surfaces
The surface of a joint at which the ends of the joint meet.
Depressions
small pit or tiny
projections
area of the bone that projects above the surface the bone
openings and spaces
pathways on the bones
Condyle (articulating surfaces)
large, smooth, rounded, oval structure
facet (articulating surfaces)
small, flat, shallow surface
head (articulating surfaces)
prominent , rounded epiphysis ( the end part of along bone)
trochlea (articulating surfaces)
smooth, grooved, pulley-like process
Alveolus (depressions)
deep pit or socket in the maxillae or mandible
fossa (depressions)
flattened or shallow depression
Sulcus (depressions)
narrow groove
crest ( projections)
narrow, prominent, ridge like projections
epicondyle ( projections)
projections adjacent to a condyle
line (projections)
low ridge
process (projections)
any marked bony prominence
Ramus (projections)
angular extension of a bone relative to the rest of the structure
spine ( projections)
pointed, slender process
trochanter ( projections)
massive, rough projection found only on the femur
tubercle (projections)
small, round projection
tuberosity (projections)
large, rough protection
canal (openings and spaces)
passageway through a bone
fissure (openings and spaces)
narrow, slitlike openings through a bone
foramen (openings and spaces)
rounded passage way through a bone
