Bone + Joint Flashcards
Tubular bone- humerous
Long bones
Cuboidal and found in the wrist and ankle
Short bones
Serve as protection; in the cranium
Flat bones
Various shapes that are not long, short or flat; facial bones
Irregular Bones
Protect tendons against wear and tear; patella
Sesamoid bones
3 types of joints
Fibrous, cartilaginous, and synovial
Freely moveable joint
Synovial
Synovial joint that permits sliding and gliding
Plane
Synovial joint that permits flexion and extension only; movement occurs in the sagittal plane only around a single axis that runs transversely; uniaxial
Hinge
Synovial joints that permit abduction and adduction as well as flexion and extension; movements occurring around 2 aces at right angles of each other; biaxial- thumb
Saddle
Synovial joints that permit flexion, extension, abduction and adduction; biaxial; circumduction is limited compared to saddle joints- knuckles
Condyloid
Synovial joint that allows movement in multiple axes and planes; multiaxial
Ball and socket
Synovial joints that permit rotation around a central axis; uniaxial
Pivot
