Anatomy Terminology- MOVEMENT TERMINOLOGY Flashcards
The body is assumed to be standing, the feet together, arms to the side, and the head, eyes, and palms of the hands facing forward
Anatomical position
An imaginary vertical plane diving the body into anterior and posterior portions. Also called the coronal plane
Frontal plane
And imaginary vertical plane dividing the body into right and left halves
Sagittal plane
And imaginary horizontal plane dividing the body into superior and inferior portions
Transverse plane
Movement of a joint that results in moving a limb away from the body’s midline; occurs in the frontal plane about a sagittal axis
Abduction
Movement of a joint that results in moving a limb toward the body’s midline, occurs in the frontal plane about a sagittal axis
Adduction
Movement of a joint that results in an increased angle between 2 bones or body surfaces at a joint; occurs in the sagittal plane about a lateral action
Extension
Movement of a joint that results in an decreased angle between 2 bones or body surfaces at a joint; occurs in the sagittal plane about a lateral action
Flexion
Flex joint to 90 degrees so that it is parallel to the ground, move into abduction in a horizontal or transverse plane
Horizontal abduction
Flex joint to 90 degrees so that it is parallel to the ground, move into adduction in a horizontal or transverse plane
Horizontal adduction
Rotating the joint toward the midline of the body
Medial (internal) rotation
Rotating the joint away from the midline
Lateral (external) rotation
