Bone Histology & Physiology Flashcards
What are bones made up of ?
A Matrix of intercellular material surrounding widely separated cells
What is the Matrix made of ?
50 % Crystallised minerals, Ca Phosphate, Ca Hydroxide, Fluoride (INORGANIC)
25% Collagen fibres (ORGANIC)
25% Water (ORGANIC)
What is Calcification?
A process of crystallisation of minerals within a collagen framework
What gives bones it’s hardness ?
Minerals
What gives bones it’s flexibility ?
Collagen
What happens when you soak a bone in Acidic solution ?
The minerals dissolve and the bone becomes rubbery and flexible
What happens to the bone of collagen is removed ?
The bone becomes brittle and would shatter easily
What is Diaphysis ?
Growing between or shaft/body
What is Epiphysis ?
Growing over or ends of the bone
What is the Metaphysis ?
Where the diaphysis and epiphysis joins
What is the Periosteum ?
Outer sheath
What does the medullary cavity contain ?
Yellow marrow
What is the endosteum ?
Thin membrane lining the medullary cavity
What are the 4 types of bone cells and what do they do ?
- Osteocyte (maintains bone tissue)
- Osteoblast (forms bone matrix)
- Osteogenic (stem cells)
- Osteoclasts (resorbs bone)
What are Osteogenic cells ?
They are Mesenchymal stem cells which undergo cell division (only bone cell to undergo cell division) to produce daughter cells called Osteoblasts.
