Bone Formation Flashcards
What are the two types of bone?
Compact/ cortical = outside of bone
Cancellous/ spongy/trabecular = inside of bone
What makes up the bone matrix?
Type 1 collagen and hydroxyapatite
How can collagen be laid down in bone matrix?
Woven bone = immature and random. For rapid growth and fracture repair. Weak bone.
Lamellar bone = strong bone. Organised fibres.
What provides the strength in bone?
Calcium in collagen
How long does it take to renew bone after remodelling?
3 months
Name the four terms to describe bone structure?
Diaphysis - shaft of bone
Epiphyses - ends of bone
Metaphysics - spongy bone occupies medullary cavity
Periosteum - outer surface of bone
Difference between osteocyte and osteoclast?
Osteocyte - form from osteoblasts after embodied in bony matrix
Osteoclast - break down bone
