Bone Anatomy & Physiology Flashcards
5 Functions
support, protection, leverage, storage, blood cell formation
tendons
attach muscle to bone
ligaments
attach bone to bone
long bone
ex. limb bones (including phalanges, but not carpals, tarsals, or patella)
short bone
ex. carpal and tarsal bones
flat bone
most skull bones, sternum, ribs
irregular bones
ex. mandible, hip bones, vertebrae
sesamoid bones
patella, numerous bones of hand/feet
sutural bones
ex. numerous bones that lie in the sutures between the flat bones of the skull
hematopoiesis
production of most blood cells occurs in red marrow of cavities in certain bones
epiphysis
end of bone (head)
metaphysis
region between the epiphysis and diaphysis
diaphysis
shaft of bone
