Bone Flashcards
What do osteoblasts do?
Synthesise uncalcified extracellular matrix called osteoid (this later becomes calcified to form bone)
What are osteocytes?
formed when osteoblasts become buried in the mineral matrix of bone and develop distinct features
what are osteoclasts?
cells that degrade bone to imitate normal bone remodelling and mediate bone loss in pathologic conditions
what is the name given to bone of the adult skeleton?
lamellar
What two categories can lamellar bone be divided into?
compact and spongy (trabecular)
What connective tissue covers the external surface of bone?
periosteum
what does the endosteum do?
lines the cavity within bone (eg. the volkmanns canal)
what is the purpose of the Haversian canal?
to transmit small neurovascular and lymphatic vessels
what connects the Haversian canal?
volkmann’s canals
where is bone marrow found?
in the space between trabeculae
what are the 2 types of bone marrow?
yellow - adipocytes and red - haemoatopoitetic stem cells
what is ossification?
process of producing new bone
what is rickets
vitamin D deficiency
what are the 3 sections of long bone?
epiphysis, metaphysis and diaphysis
what are the 4 types of bone?
long, short, flat and irregular
