Bonding, Molecular Geometry & Intermolecular Forces Flashcards
Electronegativity
A measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons.
Intramolecular bond
A bond which occurs between atoms within molecules.
Ionic bond
Transfer of electrons and subsequent electrostatic attraction.
Covalent bond
Sharing of at least one pair of electrons by two non-metal atoms.
Pure/non-polar covalent bond
An equal sharing of electrons.
Polar covalent bond
Unequal sharing of electrons leading to a dipole forming as a result of a difference in electronegativity between the atoms.
Metallic bonding
The bond between a positive kernel and a sea of delocalised electrons.
Intermolecular force
A weak force of attraction between molecules, ions, or atoms of noble gases.
Kinetic energy
The energy an object has as a result of the object’s motion.
Kinetic-Molecular theory
All matter consists of small particles which move continuously. Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of which matter consists.
