Bonding in metals & alloys Flashcards
0
Q
Describe the bonding in alloys
A
Alloys have different sized atoms which makes them harder to move because they no longer can slide past each other
1
Q
Describe the bonding in metals
A
When metals and atoms bond they form a sea of free electrons.
2
Q
Why are alloys harder than PURE metals?
A
Because it’s a metal mixed with another substance e.g steel = iron and carbon
3
Q
What is a smart alloy?
A
Smart alloys can be return to their original shape after being deformed
4
Q
Why can metals be easily shaped?
A
The atoms are all the same shape which makes it easier for them to be easily shaped and moved
5
Q
Give an example of an smart alloy
A
braces and glasses
