Bonding Definitions Flashcards
Ions of Non-Metals
Gain electrons to fill outer shell (except hydrogen)
Ions of Metals
Lose electrons to empty outer shell
Polyatomic Ions
Ions made of more than one atom
Lewis Dot Diagram
Shows valence electrons
Chemical Bonds
Attractive forces that hold atoms and ions together due to sharing or transfer of electrons
Ionic Bonds
transfer of valence electrons from metal to non-metal
Forms ions, oppositely charged, so they attract each other to form ionic compounds
Ionic Formula
Cation is written first, then anion
Subscript used to represent ratio in compound
Write both ions then swap charges of ions
Naming ionic compounds
Metals maintain elemental name
Polyatomic ions maintain name
Last part of non-metal removed and replaced with ‘ide’
Covalent Bonds
Sharing of electrons
Electrons split between valence shells, giving each atom something resembling a complete valence shell
Shared electrons count in valence of both atoms
Can be single, double or triple bonds
