Bonding Content Flashcards
What is an ionic bond?
The electrostatic force of attraction between the oppositely charged ions.
Why do ionic compounds have a high mp?
All ionic compounds have a giant ionic lattice structure, where there is strong electrostatic force of attraction between the oppositely charged ions in all directions. These strong forces need to be broken and this requires a lot of energy.
What is the overall charge of an ionic compound, and give examples.
Neutral as the charges of the anion and cations cancel each other. E.g. NaCl. As for every 1 ion of Na there is 1 ion of Cl.
In what states can ionic compounds conduct electricity?
Molten and in aqueous as ions are free to move and carry a charge. Not in solid as ions in fixed position.
