Bonding and Structure Flashcards
Why are alloys stronger than pure metals?
Different sized atoms disrupt the orderly arrangement in pure metals making it harder for the atoms to slide over one another when a force is applied
How do metals conduct electricity?
Outer ‘sea of delocalised’ electrons are free to move about around metal cations
Why are alloys stronger/harder than pure metals?
Different sized particles disrupt orderly arrangement of pure metal atoms, making it harder for atoms to slide over one another when a force is applied
What is the composition of steel and its use?
Iron & Carbon
To increase hardness
What is the composition of stainless steel and is purpose?
Iron, Chromium, Nickel & Carbon
Increase resistance to corrosion
What is the composition and purpose of brass?
Copper & Zinc
To increase hardness and strength
What is the composition and purpose of bronze?
Copper & Tin
To increase hardness and strength
