Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding ?
It is the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions former by electron transfer
What is a covalent bond?
It is a share pair of electrons between non metals
What is dative covalent bonding ?
A dative covalent bond forms when the shared pair of electrons in the covalent bond come from only one of the bonding atoms.
What is a dative covalent bond also known as?
Coordinate bond
What is metallic bonding ?
It is the electrostatic force of attraction between the positive metal and the delocalised electrons
Factors that affect the strength of metallic bonding :
- number of protons/strength of nuclear charge
- number of delocalised electrons per atom
- size of ion(smaller ion=stronger bond)
What is the shape and angel of a molecule with 2 bonding pairs and no lone pairs called?
Bond angle=180 degrees
shape=linear
Examples-CO2,CS2,BeF2
What is the shape and angel of a molecule with 3 bonding pairs and no lone pairs called?
Bond angle=120 degrees
Shape=trigonometry planar
Examples=BF3,AlCl3,SO3,NO3
