Bonding Flashcards
What are the four types of bond?
Covalent Molecular
Covalent Network
Ionic Bonding
Metallic Bonding
What is the definition of a covalent bond?
Covalent bonds are bonds of 2 or more non-metal elements only
How do covalent bonds work?
The positively charged nuclei attract the negatively charged electrons of the other atom. This creates a tug-of-war effect.
What are the 7 diatomic elements?
Iodine Bromine Chlorine Fluorine Oxygen Nitrogen Hydrogen
What does it mean to say that an atom is diatomic?
Diatomic atoms are 2 atoms of the same element who bond together to become stable
What is the definition of an Ionic Bond?
An ionic bond is a bond between metal and non-metal atoms
In Ionic bonds, where do the unpaired electrons go to and why?
In Ionic bonds, electrons move from the metal to the non-metal because non-metals have a strong attraction power and metals have weak attraction powers
What is the charge on the Chloride atom in Sodium Chloride (NaCl) if the valency of Sodium is 1?
