Bonding Flashcards
What happens to non metal ions
Gain an electron and become negatively charged ions . Reduced
How do you carry out a flame test and why
To test if it contains specific ions , a cleaned moistened sure is dipped into a solid sample of the compound and then out into a blue flame . Red - lithium Orange - sodium Lilac - potassium Brick red - calcium
How do you tests for carbonate ions
Acid is added to the test compound , it will bubble if carbonate is present and when bubbled through limewater it turns from clear to milky white
How do you test for sulfate
Add dilute hydrochloric acid, then add a few drops of barium chloride solution, if sulphate ions are present that would be a white precipitate. Or nitric acid and barium nitrate can be used .
How do you test for halide ions
Add Nitric acid then add silver nitrate.
Chloride ions - white precipitate
Bromide ions - cream precipitate
Iodide ions - yellow precipitate
How do u test for hydrogen
Wooden splint makes squeaky pop
Oxygen
Glowing splint relights
Chlorine
Blue litmus paper red , then white
Ammonia
Red litmus paper blue
What is covalent bonding
The electrostatic attraction between the nuclei of two atoms and a shared pair of electrons. Occurs between non-metal so
What is an ionic bond
Electrostatic Force of attraction between positive and negative recharged ions. Occurs between metals and nonmetals.
What happens to metal atoms
Lose their electron and become positively charged ions . Oxidised
What is shown when adding ammonium , sodium or potassium hydroxide to a solution
Precipitates are formed Blue - copper ions(copper hydroxide ) Orange brown- iron ions3 (iron hydroxide) Green- iron ions (2) (iron 2 hydroxide) White - calcium or magnesium
