Atomic Theory Flashcards
What is an ionic bond
An electrostatic force of attraction between positive and negatively charged ions
Why so ions have a high melting point
Because they are well bonded together
What does the metal atom lose
Loses one or more electrons and becomes a positive ion , the non metal atom gains one or more electrons and becomes a negative ion
How can u tell an ionic compound is being formed
Energy is given of e.g smoke , light and heat
What is the link between group number and electron configuration
The group number is the amount of electrons in the outer ring
What is the link between period number and electron configuration
Period number is the number of occupied shells
What is the link between reactivity and electron configuration
Larger atoms are more reactive as their outer electron is further from the nucleus so it can be easily lost(for metals ) , non metals have more energy levels as they are larger
What are isotopes
Are atoms of an element with same number of protons and electrons but different Numbers of neutrons . They have the same atomic number but different mass numbers .
How do you calculate the reactive atomic mass
E.g a sample of chlorine gas contains two Isotopes 75% of cl 35 and 25% of cl 37 so relative mass = (35 x 75)
–
100)
+ (37 x 25)
—
100) = 35.5
How do 3full electron shells arrangement go
2,8,8
How are atoms structured
Nucleus with protons and neutrons surrounded by ring of electrons
What did Rutherford scattering experiment prove
Matter was mostly space and the mass of an atom is concentrated in the center ( nucleus)
How are elements in the periodic table ordered
In atomic number , the number of protons in a nucleus
What is the mass number
Protons + neutrons
What are homo di atomic molecules
Molecules which contain 2 of the same element - HONIFBrCl
