Bonding Flashcards
Define covalent bonding fully
When two positive nuclei are held together by their common attraction for a shared pair of electrons and are both non metal
What are the four different shapes of molecules
Linear ,angular ,trigonal pyramidal ,tetrahedral
What is the properties of a covalent molecular structure
Low melting and boiling point due to the forces of attraction between molecules being weak ( inter molecular forces)
What is a giant lattice structure
A covalent network with many covalent bonds creating one giant structure which is very hard to break
What is a giant lattice structure
A covalent network with many covalent bonds creating one giant structure which is very hard to break
What do covalent bonds form from

Define di atomic molecules
Molecules that contain only two atoms
7 di atomic molecules
Hydrogen H2, Nitrogen N2, fluorine F2, oxygen O2, Iodine I2, chlorine cl2, Bromine Br2
Shapes of molecules
Tetra hedral original pyramidal linear angular
What can covalent substances form
Small discrete molecules (4 shapes ) or giant structures (lattice structures )
Covalent molecular substances have
Strong bonds -within- the molecule bit weak inter molecular forces between molecules.
Low melting and boiling points due to weak inter molecular forces between molecules. Don’t conduct electricity because don’t have charged particles which are free to move.
Do covelmt substances dissolve
Don’t dissolve in water may dissolve in other substances
Fully explain covalent structures
Have a network of strong covalent bonds. Has very high melting and boiling point because network of covalent bonds hard to break. Do not dissolve.
Do covalent structures conduct
Do not conduct due to mot having changed particles which are free to move
How are ions formed
When atoms gain or loose and electron to become stable and have full outer shell
What happens to metal atoms
Lose electrons to form positive ions
What happens to non metal atoms
Gain electron to form negative ions
Write ion electron equation
What are ionic bonds
The electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions
