Q

What is ionic bonding

A

An ionic bond is the term between 2 oppositely charged ions. It occurs between metals and non- metals. For example when a sodium and chlorine atom react together the sodium loses its electrons to the chlorine atom and 2 ions are formed with full outer shells

Q

What is covalent bonding

A

Covalent bonding is a occurrence between only non metals ( elements from groups 4 to 7 ) where they both need to gain electrons for a full outer shell to manage this they share their electrons with each other from their outer shells

Q

What makes nitrogen atoms different to other bonding elements

A

Each nitrogen atom has 5 electrons in its outer shell and there requires 3 more in order to have a full shell, which puts it a a disadvantage when trying to find a bond

Q

Why might some elements not bond with others

A

Some elements don’t bond with others due to the fact that they are in different groups on the periodic table which means that they have different atomic numbers and mass numbers
