bonding - Flashcards
what are polymers
they are longs chains of repeating units
what is in a polymer
lots of small units that are linked together to form a long molecule that has repeating sections
what are the atoms in a polymer joined by
strong covalent bonds
draw a repeating unit for polyethene
look on page 57 of chemistry book
how do you find the molecular formula for a polymer
give the molecular formula for polyethene
2 points
1) write down the molecular formula of the repeating unit in brackets and put and n’ outside
2) (C2H4)n
what are the intermolecular forces between polymer molecules compared to ones between simple covalent molecules and ionic or giant molecular compounds
2 points
1) they are bigger than ones between simple covalent bonds so the melting point is higher
2) but they are weaker than ionic or covalent bonds so they generally have a lower boiling points than ionic or giant molecular compounds
