Bonding Flashcards
What is an ion?
An atom or group of atoms that has an electrical charge, either positive or negative
How is an ion formed?
Atoms with incomplete outer electrons shells are unstable. Atoms must lose or gain electrons in order to become stable
How to know if it’s positively or nagativley charged?
If an atom gains electrons, it becomes negatively charged. If it loses electrons, it becomes positively charged
What is ionic bonding?
The electrostatic force between oppositely charged ions. It forms giant ionic lattices
What is covalent bonding?
The electrostatic force between the nucleus and a bonding pair of electrons. It forms simple covalent or giant covalent molecules
What is metallic bonding?
The electrostatic force between the positive ions and delocalised electrons. It forms giant metallic lattices
