Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding ?
Ionic bonding involves electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a lattice
What are the properties of an ionic substance?
High mp and bp
good solubility in water
poor conductivity when solid but good conductivity when molten
Brittle- layers of ions move relative to each other , ions of the same charge repel
When is ionic bonding stronger ?
When the ions are smaller and have higher charges
What is a simple covalent ?
Shared pair of electrons
What is a dative bond ?
a shared pair of electrons with both electrons supplied by one atom
What are the properties of simple molecules?
Low mp and bp
poor solubility in water
poor conductivity
What is metallic bonding ?
Attraction between delocalised electrons and positive ions arranged in a lattice
What are the properties of metallic bonding ?
high mp and bp
insoluble
good conductivity - delocalised electrons
malleable - layers of ions slide over each other
What are the factors that affect metallic bonding ?
number of protons
number of delocalised electrons
size of ion - smaller ion the stronger the bond.
What are the properties of a macromoleular substance ?
high mp and bp ( strong covalent bonds)
insoluble in water
diamond and sand are poor conductors
graphite good conductor (delocalised electrons )
