Amount of substance Flashcards
What is avogadro constant ?
The Avogadro constant as the number of particles in a mole.1 mole of any substance contains 6.02x10^23 particles (atoms, molecules, ions, electrons). Always contains the same number of particles.
What is concentration measured in ?
The concentration of a substance in solution, measured in mol dm^–3
What is Relative atomic mass ?
Average mass of an element compared to 1/12 of the average mass carbon 12
What is relative molecular mass ?
The average mass of a molecule of a compound compared to 1/12 of the average mass of an atom of carbon-12.
What is number of particles equation ?
n (number of moles) x avogadro constant
What is the moles equation ?
mass/mr
What is another moles equation ?
concentration x ( volume(dm^3) / 1000)
What is the ideal gas equation ?
Pv=nRt
pressure , volume , number of moles , ideal gas constant(8.31), temperature
What trends do gases and volatile liquids follow under standard conditions ?
pressure is proportional to temperature , volume is proportional to temperature and pressure and volume are inversely proportional.
What is empirical formula?
Smallest whole ratio of atoms in each element in a compound.
How to work out empirical formula ?
Step 1: Determine the masses. Step 2: Determine the number of moles by dividing the grams by the atomic mass. Step 3: Divide the number of moles of each element by the smallest number of moles. Step 4: Convert numbers to whole numbers.
What is molecular formula ?
Molecular formula is the actual number of atoms of each element in a compound.
How to work out molecular formula ?
Mr of the molecule / Mr of the empirical formula.
What is percentage atom economy ?
Economic, ethical and environmental advantages for society and for industry of developing chemical processes with a high atom economy.
What is percentage yield ?
% yield = experimental mass/theoretical mass x 100
