Buller was replaced by Lord Roberts, a war hero. He was accompanied by Kitchener
Battle at Spion Kop hill
- 24 January 1900
- British troops captured the summit but when the fog lifted they were overlooked by Boer gun emplacements,
- Contradictory orders led to 1350 casualties and 243 deaths
- disaster and retreat for British troops
Relief of the Diamond town
- French Cavalry successfully relieved the diamond town
- 15 February 1900 ending 124 day siege

Roberts succeeded in trapping the Boer commandos under Cronje at Paadeberg and bombarded them into submission
13 march 1900
- Roberts advanced to the orange free state and captured Bloemfontein
- 1000 British troops died from typhoid from drinking water polluted with corpses of men and horses.

- Roberts sent a small force to Mafeking which was relieved after a 217 day siege
- this caused huge celebrations in Britian
- Baden Powell became a national hero
