Body Tissue/Histology Flashcards
Epithelial Tissue
Acts as an “interface” between other tissue and the outside environment or internal cavities
A lining (inside and outside)
Makes up glands
YOUR SKIN
Avascular
Has no blood cells
Simple epithelial tissue
one layer thick
Stratified epithelial tissue
2+ layers thick
Squamous cell
flat shaped
Cuboidal cell
cube shaped cell
columnar cell
column shaped cell
Epithelial tissue’s 4 major functions
- protection
- control absorption and secretion
- location for some sensation
- specialized glandular secretions
Exocrine glands
A gland that makes substances such as sweat, tears, saliva, milk, and digestive juices, and releases them through a duct or opening to a body surface
Endocrine glands
ductless glands of the endocrine system that secrete their products, hormones, directly into the blood
Connective tissue
Supports tissues
Connects tissues- interconnects part of the body
Separates types of tissues
3 basic characteristics:
- Cells
- Ground substance
- Fibers
Extracellular matrix
A large network of proteins and other molecules that surround, support, and give structure to cells and tissues in the body
Made of ground substances and fibers
Macrophages
Cell found in connective tissue
kills microorganisms, removes dead cells, and stimulates the action of other immune system cells.
Fibroblasts
cell found in connective tissue
secrete collagen proteins that help maintain the structural framework of tissues
Adipocytes
found in connective tissue
stores lipids/fats
