Body Systems Flashcards
What is Digestion?
Breaking down food so that it is small and soluble enough to pass through the wall of the small intestine
What is Absorption?
transporting digested food molecules from the lumen of the gut into the blood
Name the parts of the body from smallest to biggest
Chemicals, Cells, Tissue, Organs, Organ Systems, Organisms
Describe the process of digestion
The mouth creates a bolus which is chewed mushed food.
The teeth chew the food and the tongue pushes it.
Food is squeezed in the oesophagus into the stomach
The stomach contains acid. The acid and special chemicals called enzymes break down the good even more.
In the small intestine, the broken down food gets into the blood so the body can use it. It is 6 - 8 metres long.
What is the stomach made off and what is its purpose?
The stomach is made of muscular tissue (to churn the food aka mechanical breakdown), nervous tissue (to co-ordinate the muscular contractuons) and glandular tissue (to produce and secretes enzymes, hydrochloric acid and mucus) and epithelial tissue (to cover the outside and inside of the stomach)
What is Peristalsis?
Squeezing food in the oesaphagus
What are the 4 uses of glucose?
to be converted to starch, for respiration, to make new chemicals, for storage
What does glucose produce?
Protein, cellulose, sugar and fat
Describe some qualities of starch
Starch is a large molecule called a polymer
It is a store of extra glucose the plant has mad
It is insoluble
Plants store starch in their roots
Roots can’t produce their own starcch because they don’t do photosynthesis
Where do the bones meet?
At the joints
What are the joints at the shoulder and hip called?
Ball and Socket joints - they allow movement in different directions
What type of joint is the elbow joint?
A hinge joint - it allows movement up and down, but not side to side
What type of joints are in the spine
Fused joints that only have a small amount of movement
What type of joint is the skull?
Immovable joint - made up of joints that have fused together so they cannot move
What is respiration?
A chemical process in which energy is released from food substances, such as glucose - a sugar
