Body Systems Flashcards
Respiratory System
It executes the gas exchange between cells and the environment and includes trachea and lungs. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the environment and converts it into a form that cells can use.
Circulatory System
the system that circulates blood through the body, consisting of the heart, blood vessels, and glands.
Muscular System
This system is the system that allows you to move and contract your muscles
Skeletal System
The skeletal system provides support and protection for the body’s internal organs and gives the muscles a point of attachment.
Endocrine System
The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things.
Digestive System
This system intakes food, breaks it down into usable nutrients and excretes solid waste products. It includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines.
Nervous System
This system allows perception, emotion, thought, and rapid response to the environment. It includes the brain and nerves.
Immune System
The organs and processes of the body that provide resistance to infection and toxins. These organs include the thymus, bone marrow, and lymph nodes.
Homeostasis
Internal balance of the human body
Thermoregulation
The control of body temperature to maintain homeostasis. Sweating when you are hot, shivering and getting goosebumps when you are cold are both examples of thermoregulation.
Diffusion
When molecules move from high to low concentration across a membrane.
Osmosis
When water molecules move from high to low concentration across a membrane.
Sodium
Chemical element that makes up salt.
Concentration
Amount of stuff (molecules) in a given area.
Feedback Mechanism
Systematic response of an organism to a change in the internal or external environment
