Body Regions Flashcards
Why are the head and neck often lumped together?
Due to their close proximity and anatomical relationships
What does the head house as well as the brain and sensory organs?
The beginning of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts
What does the neck act as?
A passageway between the head and the thorax
What are two important structures that sit within the neck?
Larynx and oesophagus
What is the trunk?
Is the central mass of the human body
What regions does the trunk contain?
Thoracic, abdominal and pelvic cavities
What can the plane of superior thoracic aperture also be called?
Thoracic inlet
What can the thorax be referred to as?
The chest
What are the boundaries of the thorax made up of?
Thoracic cage and thoracic wall muscles
What is the thoracic cage also known as?
Rib cage
What are the 4 main boundaries?
Superior boundary, inferior boundary, posterior boundary and anterior boundary
What does the superior boundary contain?
Superior thoracic inlet
What does the inferior boundary contain?
Diaphragm
What does the posterior boundary contain?
Ribs and thoracic vertebrate
What does the anterior boundary contain?
Ribs, costal cartilage and sternum
How many ribs are there on each side?
12
What is the thoracic cavity?
The space within the thoracic cage
How many regions can the thoracic cavity be split into?
3
What are the 3 regions of the thoracic cavity?
Right pleural, mediastinum and left pleural
What does the mediastinum contain?
Heart, pericardium and associated structures
What sits either side of the mediastinum?
Lungs and pleural cavities
How does the abdomen extend from the diaphragm?
Superiorly
Where does the abdomen extend to?
To the inguinal ligaments and pelvic brim
What systems is the abdomen made up of?
Gastrointestinal and genitourinary
What are the main structures that can be found in the abdominal cavities?
Liver, gallbladder, oesophagus, stomach, spleen, small intestine, large intestine, kidneys and adrenal glands
What are the two models that describe the regions of the abdomen?
Nine region model and 4 quadrant model
What is the pelvic cavity protected by?
Hip/bone
What are the 3 parts that the hip bone/bony pelvis made up of?
Ilium, ischium and pubis
What are the two subdivisions of the pelvis known as?
Greater ‘false’ pelvis and the lesser ‘true’ pelvis
Where does the greater pelvis lie?
Between the two large ilium bones
Where does the lesser pelvis lie?
Deep to the pubic bone and inferior the pelvic inlet
