Body Planes, Regions, & Cavities Flashcards
What does the Abdominal Cavity consist of and what is it bound by?
Consists of the stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, most small intestines, and colon. It is bounded by the diaphragm, body wall, and pelvic cavity
What does the Pelvic Cavity hold and what is it surrounded by?
It holds the urinary bladder, uterus, urethra, the lower part of the large intestine, some parts of the small intestine, and some reproductive organs (both M/F). It is surrounded by the abdominal cavity, sacrum, and pelvis.
Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ)
Contains most of the liver, gallbladder, a small portion of the pancreas, right kidney, and a portion of the small intestines & colon
Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ)
Contains a portion of the liver, the spleen, the stomach, majority of pancreas, left kidney, and a portion of the small intestines & colon
Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ)
Contains about 1/2 of the small intestines/colon, the right ovary & fallopian tube, appendix, and the right ureter
Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ)
Contains about 1/2 of small intestines/colon, left ovary & fallopian tube, left ureter
what are the 9 abdominal cavity regions?
right hypochondriac, left hypochondriac, epigastric, right lumbar, umbilical, left lumbar, hypogastric, left iliac, right iliac
Define Right Hypochondriac
Lateral (side) to the epigastric region, beneath lower ribs
Define Epigastric
Superior to umbilical region, above the stomach
Left Hypochondriac
Lateral (side) to epigastric region, beneath lower ribs
Right Lumbar
Lateral to umbilical region, at the waist
Hypogastric
Inferior to umbilical region, below navel
Left iliac
Lateral to hypogastric region, at the groin
Right Iliac
Lateral (right side) to the hypogastric region, at the groin
Give some examples of what is in the Abdominal Cavity
Gallbladder, Spleen, Stomach, Pancreas
Give some examples of what is in the Thoracic Cavity
Heart, Lungs, Esophagus, Trachea,
Give examples of what is in the Dorsal Cavity
Brain, Spinal Cord
Frontal Plane (Coronal Plane)
Divides the body vertically, creates anterior and posterior portions of the body
Sagittal Plane (Lateral Plane)
Divides the body into left and right
Transverse Plane (Cross-section)
Divides the body into upper and lower sections
Define Cavity
An empty space
What are the two major cavities within our bodies?
Dorsal and Ventral
What are the sub groups that are in the Dorsal Cavity? What is their purpose?
Cranial Cavity: formed by the skull, contains & protects brain
Spinal (vertebral) Cavity: protects the spinal cord
What makes up the Ventral Cavity?
Thoracic, Abdomen, and Pelvic cavities
What 4 areas make up the Thoracic Cavity, and what do they contain?
Two Pleural Cavities: each contain a lung
Perdicardial: contains heart and is medial to the pleural cavities
Mediastinum: contains esophagus, trachea, thymus, gland, aorta, and inferior vena cavae
