evidence
- evidence and examples can come in many forms
- you should always have evidence / examples to support your claims
- your claims are best supported with textual evidence derived from your primary text or secondary materials
- your evidence / example gives the proof of your claim
analysis / explanation
- the analysis connects the example evidence to the thesis of the essay
- it explains how and why the examples support the idea of that paragraph specifically and the essay as a whole
- the analysis answers the so what question
- analysis is never plot summary or observation
