Superior
Towards the head, or above/upper
Inferior
Towards the feet, or below/lower.
Posterior
Towards the back of the body
Anterior
towards the front of the body or situated on the the frontal side
Dorsal
Towards the back of the body
Ventral
Towards the front of the body
Flexion
A bending movement to decrease the joint angle between the bones of the limb at the joint.
Extension
A bending movement that decreases the joint angle between the bones of the limb at that joint.
Hyperflexion
When a joint is flexed beyond its normal range
Hyperextension
When a joint is extended beyond its normal range
Distal
Further from the trunk/axial body
Proximal
Closer to the trunk/axial body
Lateral rotation
Rotating towards the side of the body/away from the median
Medial rotation
Rotating towards the midline of the body/median
Supine
The position of lying on one’s back, face up. Dorsal surface downward.
