Anatomical Position
Person stands erect with feet together and eyes forward. Palms face anteriorly with the thumbs pointed away from the body
Axial Region
The main axis of the body (includes trunk region and head)
Appendicular Region
The limbs (arms and legs)
Superior
Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or the body; above (also called cranial)
Cranial
Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or the body; above (also called superior)
Inferior
Away from the head end or toward the lower part of a structure or the body; below (also called caudal)
Caudal
Away from the head end or toward the lower part of a structure or the body; below (also called inferior)
Anterior
Toward or at the front of the body; in front of (also called ventral)
Ventral
Toward or at the front of the body; in front of (also called anterior)
Posterior
Toward or at the back of the body; behind (also called dorsal)
Dorsal
Toward or at the back of the body; behind (also called posterior)
Medial
Toward or at the midline of the body; on the inner side of
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side of
Proximal
Closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment or a limb to the body trunk (ex. elbow is “ “ to wrist)
Distal
Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk (ex. wrist is “ “ to elbow)
Superficial
Toward or at the body surface (also called external)
External
Toward or at the body surface (also called superficial)
Deep
Away from the body surface, more internal (also called internal)
