What exactly is nonverbal communication ?
It is a mean of transmitting information.
It is achieved through facial expressions, gestures, touching, physical movements, posturem body adornment, even with the tone, timbre and volume of the voice
What are the 10 commandments for observing and decoding nonverbal communications successfully ?
I/ Be a competent observer of your environment
II/ Observing in context is key to understanding nonverbal behavior
III/ Learn to recognize and decode nonverbal behaviors that are universal
IV/ Learn to recognize idiosyncratic nonverbal behaviors
V/ When you interact with others, try to establish their baseline behaviors
VI/ Always try to watch people for multiple tells – behaviors that occur in clusters or in succession
VII/ It’s important to look for changes in a person’s behavior that can signal changes in thoughts, emotions, interest, or intent
VIII/ Learning to detect false or misleading nonverbal signals is also critical
IX/ Knowing how to distinguish between comfort and discomfort will help you to focus on the most important behaviors for decoding non verbal communications
X/ When observing others, be subtle about it
Commandment I/ Be a competent observer of your environment
Effortful observation (a way of life) with every sense.
Don’t be a poor observer. Be aware of what is going on arond you.
Commandment II/ Observing in context is key to understanding nonverbal behavior
Gather as much context as possible to better understand nonverbal communication.
Commandment III/ Learn to recognize and decode nonverbal behaviors that are universal
The more universal behaviors you can recognize and interpret, the better you can assess a person’s thoughts, feelings, and intentions.
Commandment IV/ Learn to recognize idiosyncratic nonverbal behaviors
An idiosyncratic nonverbal behavior is a signal particularly unique to a single individual.
Get a database for every person (or group of persons sharing common interests)
Commandment V/ When you interact with others, try to establish their baseline behaviors
Get the baseline behavior of people you interact with such as the position of their hands and feet, their postures, their common facial expressions, the tilt of their head, how they look normally, how they sit, where they place their possessions, etc…
Commandment VI/ Always try to watch people for multiple tells – behaviors that occur in clusters or in succession
Your accuracy in reading people will be enhanced when you observe multiple tells, or clusters of behavior body signals on which to rely.
Commandment VII/ It’s important to look for changes in a person’s behavior that can signal changes in thoughts, emotions, interest, or intent
Sudden changes in behavior can help reveal how a person is processing information or adapting to emotional events.
Changes in person’s behavior can also reveal his or her interests or intentions in certain circumstances.
Commandment VIII/ Learning to detect false or misleading nonverbal signals is also critical
The ability to diffenrentiate between authentic and misleading cues takes practice and experience.
Commandment IX/ Knowing how to distinguish between comfort and discomfort will help you to focus on the most important behaviors for decoding non verbal communications
Learning to read comfort and discomfort cues in others accurately will help you to decipher what their bodies and minds are truly saying.
Commandment X/ When observing others, be subtle about it
Your ideal goal is observe others without their knowing it, in other words, unobtrusively.
