Body Defense System and White Blood Cells Flashcards
What is one of the most protective barriers that your body has?
Skin as the pathogen cannot penetrate through it
How does your nose prevent pathogens from entering?
Your nose is lined with hairs that trap pathogens and particles such as dust
What organ is good for breaking down pathogens?
Stomach
Why is your stomach good for killing pathogens?
Hydrochloric acid in your stomach breaks down any pathogens that enter with food
What 2 antis do white blood cells create?
Antitoxins and antibodies
What is phagocytsis?
This is when white blood cells ingest and digest pathogens to kill them
What are antigens?
These are created by pathogens in a specific shape to infect the body
How are antigens treated?
White blood cells create antibodies which match the shape of the antigen to destroy the pathogen
What is a toxin?
Toxins are made by pathogens to cause damage to the body or make you feel unwell
Why do white blood cells “remember” previously encountered diseases?
So they will be able to produce antibodies quicker if the body gets infected with the same or similar disease again
What type of pathogens are phagocytes drawn to?
They are drawn to pathogens that are “marked” with antibodies
