body coordination glossary Flashcards
antibiotic
a medicine that weakens/destroys microbes such as fungi and bacteria. antibiotics have no effect on viruses
bacteria (single bacterium)
microscopic organisms forming one of six kingdoms of living things: some types of bacteria are pathogens
immune system
the body system that defends/prevents the body against infections or diseases
infection
the presence of a pathogen inside the body
microbe
a living thing that can only be seen with the help of a microscope
pathogen
a microscopic organism that can cause disease
virus
a typer of microscopic pathogen that can only multiply by invading a living cell
antibody
a protein that can identify and fight a specific pathogen. Produced by B cells, specialised to fight one the of pathogen.
Bacterium
A simple, single celled microbe without. a nucleus.
Chemical Barrier
A defence that kills pathogens before they can enter the body
Cilia
Microscopic hairs on cell that line the airways
Contagious disease
A medical condition that can spread from person to person by a pathogen
disease
A medical condition with specific symptoms
first line of defence
Barriers that prevent pathogens from entering the body. e.g. skin saliva, urine, tears
immunity
The body’s ability to protect itself from infection
infection
An invasion of the body by pathogens that then multiply
infectious disease
A medical condition that is caused by a pathogen
memory cell
a B cell that remains in the blood stream to recognise pathogens
microbe
An organism that is too small to be seen with the naked eye
Mucus
A sticky liquid that lines the nose, throat lungs and intestines
Non-infectious disease
A medical condition that is not caused by a pathogen
Pathogen
A microscopic organism or agent that causes disease
Phagocyte
A white blood cell that engulfs and destroys pathogens
Physical barrier
A defence that blocks or traps pathogens before they can enter the body
vaccination
A treatment that helps build immunity to an infectious disease
Virus
A microscopic infectious agent made of genetic material and proteins
White blood cell
A component of blood that fights infections
