Body Coordination and Homeostasis Flashcards
PNS
peripheral nervous system, made up of nerves which carry electrical messages called impulses to the CNS
CNS
central nervous system, made up of the brain and spinal cord, aids in processing information and coordinating responses
impulse
electrical message carried by neurons
neuron
a nerve cell, draw one right now motherfucker
dendrite
short extension of the cytoplasm of the cell body
dendrite function
to receive impulses from receptors and carry impulses towards the cell body.
cell body
contains the nucleus and organelles
nucleus
stores DNA and controlls functions of the cell.
Axon
a long extension of the cytoplasm that carries impulses away from the cell body to the axon terminal.
axon terminal
recieves impulses from the cell body, carries impulses to the effectors or to the dendrites
myelin sheath
layer of white fatty material that covers the axon to protect it from damage and to speed up the movement of nerve impulses
sensory neuron function
carries nervous impulses from receptors to the CNS
interneuron function
carries nervous impulses between sensory and motor neurons
motor neurons function
carries nervous impulse from CNS to effectors
sensory neuron structural
cell body located off to one side of the axon
interneuron structure
no myelin sheath, cell body in the centre of the axon.
motor neuron strructure
cell body located at end of neuron, axon terminal connects to effector
nervous system function
controls all functions and actions of the body by sending electrical signals to the cns via the pns
