Body Composition Flashcards
What can body comp tell us?
Differences in athletic performances
Gender differences (higher fat in females)
Health issues
What is gross body mass?
Scale weight
Provides only part of the information about body composition
How does accuracy increase?
With the number of compartments
What is fat mass?
Essential and storage fat
What is essential fat mass?
intracellular: bone marrow, CNS, muscle, cellular membrane etc.
What is storage fat mass?
both subcutaneous adipose and visceral fat in the thoracic and abdomen area (around packed between the organs)
What are the two compartment models?
Most popular and convenient model
Divides the body into fat mass and fat free mass(lean body mass)
What are multiple compartment models?
Able to account for more than two body compartments
less error
What is the direct assessment of body composition?
Chemical analysis (cadaver analysis) dissolving the body into fat and non-fat components
What are the indirect methods of body composition?
1)Lab methods Under water weighing Dexa Bod Pod Skin Folds BMI 2) Clinically convenient Charts, scales, BIA, NRI
What is under water weighing?
Gold Standard for body comp.
Determines body density
Fat 0.9g/ml
Fat free 1.1g/ml
What is Archimedes 1st principle?
The volume of the object is equal to the volume of water displaced
What is Archimedes 2nd principle?
The volume of the object is equal to the force pushing up on the submerged object
Reduction of gravitational pull
Body density =
Mass/volume
The less dense someone weighs in water…
the less dense they are and the fatter they will be
